Two players · one screen · questionable luggage

Pocket Smugglers

A very small border. A very innocent suitcase.

Rules & values

Two people alternate packing and inspecting. Each gets four deliveries. Most points after eight deliveries wins. You start with 10 coins; coins and delivered goods both count toward your score.

  1. Pack privately. Choose 1–3 goods from your six-card hand. Once per turn, you may select 1–2 unwanted cards and exchange them for free before packing.
  2. Make a declaration. Say the entire suitcase contains apples, books, or scarves. You may lie. You cannot declare rubies. Offer 0–3 coins to be waved through; only coins you currently have may be offered.
  3. Seal and pass the screen. The inspector sees the number of goods, declaration, and offer—not your cargo, remaining hand, or secret order. Talk, bluff, and bargain all you like, but the sealed offer stays fixed.
  4. Wave through: the inspector takes the offered coins and all cargo is delivered. Both players then see what was inside.
  5. Inspect: if every item matches the declaration, everything is delivered and the inspector pays the packer 2 coins per item as compensation. Otherwise only matching items are delivered; every wrong item is seized and its fine goes to the inspector. The offered bribe is not paid when inspected.

Apples / books / scarves: 3 points delivered. Fine if undeclared: 2 coins each.

Rubies: 6 points delivered. Always contraband; fine if caught: 4 coins each.

Your secret order: +2 points for each delivered item of your favorite legal kind. Revealed privately when you pack, then to everyone at the end. Seized and unshipped goods score nothing.

Compensation and fines are always paid, even if they put someone below zero. Negative coins are debt and subtract from the final score; they do not eliminate you.

Each player has an independently shuffled stock of 10 apples, 10 books, 10 scarves, and 6 rubies. Hands refill after deliveries. No timer.
